We classify every cited domain in our captures by what kind of site it is: insurer, comparison site, publisher, regulator, agency, forum. One domain keeps appearing near the top of all three insurance lines.
| Line | YouTube citations | Share | Rank among all sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial | 842 | 9.9% | 3rd |
| Home | 349 | 6.9% | 3rd |
| Car | 349 | 6.1% | 4th |
In commercial insurance, YouTube is cited more often than every carrier except NEXT Insurance and The Hartford. It is cited more than Progressive Commercial, more than GEICO, more than Hiscox.
The caveat we are putting first
YouTube is not a source in the way NerdWallet is a source. It is a platform hosting millions of channels, and treating it as one entity is like treating all of Medium as one publication.
The honest statement is narrower: google.com/youtube URLs hold 6 to 10% of citation slots in insurance AI Overviews. Which channels, and whether a small number of them account for most of it, is a question our current data cannot answer.
We are running that analysis and will publish the channel-level breakdown rather than leave this as a domain-level curiosity.
Why it is worth saying anyway
Because the aggregate number is doing something specific, and insurance marketing teams are almost universally not planning for it.
Insurance content strategy in 2026 is written pages. Blog posts, coverage guides, cost explainers, state requirement pages. That is what agencies get briefed to produce and what carriers measure.
If somewhere between 6% and 10% of the source slots in the answer layer are going to video, a written-only content programme is competing for a smaller share of the available citations than anyone’s plan assumes.
What this probably reflects
Two mechanisms, neither confirmed.
Google has strong incentives to surface its own properties, and has been placing video in AI Overviews across many categories.
And insurance has a large explanatory video ecosystem: agents explaining coverage, consumer channels comparing carriers, claims walkthroughs. That content answers the same questions written guides answer, in a format a lot of people prefer.
What it does not mean
It does not mean start a YouTube channel this quarter. Video produced badly, at volume, to chase citation slots is the same mistake as text produced badly at volume.
It means the citation board is not a written-content leaderboard, and measuring only your written content against only your competitors’ written content gives you an incomplete picture of who is actually in the answer.
Method
