Insurance search in Alberta: who ranks and who Google cites

This page was rebuilt in August 2026. It previously listed keyword volumes captured in 2024. It now reports live monthly measurement of the same market: who ranks, who Google cites in its AI answers, and what those searches actually return. The method is published in full on our methodology page.

Alberta behaves differently from the American markets we measure, and the difference is worth understanding before spending anything on search here.

An AI Overview appeared on 63.2% of the 19 car insurance searches tracked in Alberta, against 78.6% across the United States. When it does appear it cites more sources, 8.1 on average against 6.8.

Two comparison sites outrank every individual insurer

5Redditforum46.5
6LowestRatesaggregator41.0
7BrokerLinkagency39.4
8Allstatecarrier38.2

Rates.ca and Ratehub hold the top two positions, and TD Insurance is the highest-placing insurer at roughly three quarters of the leader’s visibility.

That is a statement about individual brands, not about the category. Insurers as a group hold 40.9% of Alberta’s organic results against 30.1% for comparison sites, and 22 of the 57 top-three slots. Three insurers appear in the top eight above.

What is unusual is that any comparison site outranks every insurer at all. In the American states we measure, a carrier holds the top individual position almost everywhere. Alberta is the clearest case in our data of comparison platforms beating insurers head to head, and it is worth understanding before spending anything on search here.

Belairdirect leads. It is also cited more than its organic position would predict, which usually means something published elsewhere is being trusted rather than something on its own site.

Note the agency share. Alberta brokerages supply a meaningful proportion of the sources behind these answers, which is not true in most American states.
