The Hartford has been selling insurance since 1810. It has the highest organic search visibility for business insurance in all 50 US states we measure. Not most of them. All of them.
In the AI Overview sitting above those results, it is the most-cited source in eight.
NEXT Insurance, founded in 2016, leads in 42.
The counts
Across 1,344 commercial insurance searches captured in September 2026, we recorded 8,466 citations in Google AI Overviews. The top of that list:
| Source | Citations | Share |
|---|---|---|
| NEXT Insurance | 1,248 | 14.7% |
| The Hartford | 1,053 | 12.4% |
| YouTube | 842 | 9.9% |
| Progressive Commercial | 717 | 8.5% |
| GEICO | 455 | 5.4% |
In August the same measurement put NEXT at 944 and The Hartford at 940, a gap of four citations. A month later the gap is 195.
Why this is not a ranking story
It would be easy to read this as NEXT out-ranking The Hartford. It has not. The Hartford’s organic visibility is the highest in every US market on our board, and that has not changed between editions.
What changed is which pages Google’s generative layer pulls from when it composes an answer. Those are two different selections running on the same query, and they are producing different winners.
The practical version: a marketing team watching rank tracking for commercial insurance terms sees nothing wrong. Position one, every state, holding steady. The answer above those results is being written from somebody else’s pages.
What NEXT’s pages do differently
We have not run a controlled comparison, so treat this as observation rather than conclusion. Three things are visible from the cited URLs.
NEXT’s cited pages are almost entirely coverage-specific and question-shaped: what general liability covers, what a certificate of insurance is, what workers’ compensation costs in a named state. They answer one question per page.
The Hartford’s cited pages skew toward product and landing pages that serve a buying journey rather than a question. Those pages rank. They are not structured the way an extraction layer wants.
And NEXT publishes cost and coverage specifics in plain text rather than in interactive tools. A quoting widget cannot be quoted.
The wider pattern
NEXT is not an outlier in our commercial data. It is the clearest case of a pattern that shows up across the line.
In commercial insurance answers, brands named in the text and brands cited as sources are frequently not the same companies. Progressive is named in 9.6% of US commercial answers and cited as a source in 0.1% of them. NEXT is named in 9.5% and cited in 24.4%.
Being recommended and being used as evidence are separate outcomes. Most brands are tracking neither.
Method
1,344 commercial insurance searches across 50 US states and 6 Canadian provinces, captured September 2026 through geo-targeted live SERP retrieval. An AI Overview appeared on 83.8% of them, citing an average of 8.0 sources. Citations are attributed to brands through a published entity taxonomy; progressivecommercial.com and progressive.com are counted separately, which is how Progressive Commercial’s 717 citations became visible at all.
