Canada is a smaller sample than the US, and we will say so before the numbers rather than after. Six provinces, 114 car insurance searches. Treat it as a signal, not a finding.
With that stated: the split between ranking and being cited is cleaner here than anywhere in our US data.
The two boards
TD Insurance has the highest organic search visibility for car insurance in all six provinces we measure. Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan.
In the AI Overview above those results, Belairdirect is the most-cited source in four and Intact in two.
TD Insurance leads the citation board in none.
Why Canada might behave differently
Three structural reasons worth considering, none of which we have tested.
Canadian auto insurance is provincially regulated with public insurers in several provinces, so the content landscape is more fragmented than in the US.
The bank-owned insurers, TD and RBC, have enormous domain authority from the banking side. That carries organic rankings efficiently and may carry citation selection much less well, because authority and extractability are different properties.
And the direct writers, Belairdirect and Sonnet among them, publish more question-shaped explanatory content because they have no agent channel to route questions through.
Home insurance splits differently again
RBC Insurance leads organic in five of six provinces for home insurance. The citation board there is led by Allstate in four.
So the pattern is not “bank-owned insurers lose the answer layer.” It is that organic leadership and citation leadership are decided separately, and in Canada they have so far never produced the same winner in the same line.
The Quebec caveat
Our Quebec boards are built from English-language queries. Most Quebec insurance search happens in French: assurance auto, soumission assurance.
We are not measuring the majority of that market and the board says so. A French-language capture is planned. Until then, read Quebec as incomplete rather than as measured.
Method
114 car insurance searches across six Canadian provinces, captured September 2026 through geo-targeted live SERP retrieval. Six provinces is a small sample and the direction of these findings should be weighted accordingly. There are no exceptions within the sample, which is what makes it worth publishing at all.
